Today is World Meteorological Day! It’s celebrated every day to honor the formation of the World Meteorological Organization. This year’s theme is “Weather and Climate: Engaging Youth” and encourages young people to learn more about our weather and climate system – and to contribute to action on climate change issues.
Past themes have included “Our future climate” in 2003 and “Weather, climate and the air we breathe” in 2009. Each year, a new theme is announced.
This global observance is celebrated in several different ways. There are various conferences and exhibitions for meteorological professionals, community leaders and the general public. Prizes for research are presented on or close to World Meteorological Day, such as the International Meteorological Organization Prize.
