National Public Lands Day
National Public Lands Day, an annual volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands of our country, began in 1994 with the help of three federal agencies and 700 hardworking volunteers. It has since turned into the largest hands-on public land volunteer effort, with participants across the nation coming together to build trails, plant trees, and clean up public land.
This event was created in order to continue the legacy of Civilian Conservation Corps, who first came into existance under FDR's New Deal programs. This "tree army" worked from 1933 until 1941, conserving national, state, county, and municipal land and preserving and renewing the nation's natural resources.
