Independent Bookstore Day

Today is Independent Bookstore Day! This holiday is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April. It highlights the unique role independent bookstores play in promoting literacy, local culture, and a love of reading.

The celebration began in 2014, when the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association launched the first Independent Bookstore Day with just a few dozen participating shops. The idea quickly caught on, and the event soon expanded across the United States. Today, hundreds of independent bookstores participate with special promotions, author appearances, exclusive merchandise, and community events.
