Today is Pentecost, a Christian holiday that celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit. The holiday falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter, which is also 50 days after Easter (“Pentecost” is derived from the Greek word pentekoste, which means “fiftieth”).
The holiday commemorates when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. Once the Apostles received the Holy Spirit, they began spreading Jesus’s message. For this reason, Pentecost is regarded as the beginning or birthday of the Christian church.
