Kindergarten Day
Today is Kindergarten Day! Always celebrated on April 21, this day honors the preschool education institution. It also recognizes the creator of the concept of kindergarten, Friedrich Frobel. Born on April 21, 1782, he created the first “play and learn” institutes.
The first such institute was created in 1837 as a social experiment for a child’s transition from home to a school system. His primary goal was based on the concept that children should be taken care of and nourished in “children’s gardens,” much like plants in a garden. This idea of a “children’s garden” later became known as “kindergarten”.
In the United States, children attend kindergarten around age 5 to 6. It is considered the first formal year of a child’s education. This is a big step for any child, and surely a day no parent will ever forget!
To celebrate, show your child photos from their first day of kindergarten and remind them how proud of them you were on that day. If your child is younger, show them photos of your own first day!
