Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

Cinco de Mayo (or the 5th of May) is observed in the US and around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. The key to a great Cinco de Mayo fiesta is bright colors and decorations, authentic Mexican food and music, and an appreciation of the Mexican culture.

  • Food: If it's not possible to get food from a local Mexican restaurant, you can easily pull together the party menu yourself. Chips, salsa, and guacamole to start are always a big hit. Tacos and fajitas are fun and easy for the main meal. Set up your own taco bar and let everyone choose what they want!
  • Drinks: Margaritas, daquiris, and Mexican beer should be plenty to please the guests at your Cinco de Mayo party (in addition to more traditional non-alcoholic options).
  • Music: If you really want to go all out, hire a mariachi band to perform at your party. As a substitute, download some Mexican music and play it through your computer or ipod.
  • Decorations: Use lots of color (bright pink, green, and yellow) in your decorations. Little lights and lanterns create a festive atmopshere. Even different colored plates (commonly refered to as "fiestaware") can add to the atmosphere.
  • Favors: Maracas, the soundmakers that you shake, come in beautiful colors and are always a fun takeaway. Your guests can use them to have fun playing along with the music at the party and then as a fun reminder of your event.
