National Yo-Yo Day
There’s no better excuse than this fun holiday to dig out your old yo-yo and show off your talents. It’s National Yo-Yo Day!
Considered to be the second-oldest toy in history, the yo-yo is both a popular and historic toy. This beloved toy can be traced back to Ancient Greece where yo-yos were made of wood, metal, and terracotta. They were often decorated with pictures of the gods and considered to be a sacred gift to the gods. To pay homage to their families, children would place their yo-yos on their family alter as a rite of passage into adulthood.
Over time, yo-yos have become an increasingly beloved toy for people of all ages to enjoy. The term "yo-yo" wasn't coined until 1920 when a man named Pedro Flores began manufacturing the gadgets at his factory in California. He gave the iconic toy its modern-day name and it's been a hit ever since. Did you know that Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon were all fans of the yo-yo? They would often show off their skills in the White House!
Today, celebrate this remarkable and historic toy. Practice a few tricks and host your own competition to see who amongst your friends has true yo-yo talent!
