The origin of the bagel can be traced back to Poland during the 13th century, where they boiled then baked a thin ring of dough called obwarzanek. The bagel was first introduced to the United States in the late 19th century by Eastern European Jewish immigrants. When they started being sold in supermarkets nationwide in the 1950s, they surpassed donuts in popularity as a breakfast staple.
