Loving Day
Today is Loving Day! Loving Day is celebrated on June 12th each year to commemorate the anniversary of the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia. This monumental case declared that state laws banning interracial marriage were unconstitutional.
The case involved Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who lived in Virginia and whose marriage in 1958 was deemed illegal according to state law. The Lovings decided to fight back against these laws and, after a lengthy battle, ultimately won the right to live together as husband and wife in Virginia. This was a pivotal win for the Civil Rights Movement as interracial marriages were forbidden in sixteen U.S. states at the time.
