National Margarita Day

Today is National Margarita Day! The margarita cocktail has been a beloved cocktail since the 1940s. You can mix up a classic margarita for yourself using tequila, Cointreau or Triple Sec, and lime juice. Many bartenders have put their own unique spin on the margarita, though no one knows who created the original recipe. Send a virtual cheers with a free National Margarita Day eCard!

Many people claim that they invented the margarita, one being a bartender from Mexico City, named Willie. He claims to have created the famed drink in 1934, and named it for his friend Marguerite Hemery. Another well-known legend is that a restaurant-owner named Carlos “Danny” Herrera developed the drink at his restaurant in Tijuana. He is believed to have invented the cocktail for a customer named Marjorie King, who was allergic to all hard alcohol except for tequila. Another story is that the Dallas socialite Margarita Sames mixed up the drink in 1948 for a house full of guests. One of her guests later added the drink to the bar menu at his hotels.

While the true identity of the tequila master may never be known, the margarita will go down in history as one of the most popular mixed drinks of all time. To celebrate National Margarita Day, invite some friends to a virtual or in-person tasting and enjoy a pitcher of homemade margaritas!
