Juneteenth

Today we observe Juneteenth, the annual celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. On this occasion, we reflect on Black freedom in America, racial justice and equality, and how far we still have to go. Juneteenth was first celebrated in Texas in 1865 and has since spread across the United States and the world. Send a Juneteenth eCard to friends and family to spread awareness about this important holiday.

People often wonder why Juneteenth is celebrated on the 19th of June, instead of on September 22nd, when the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln. The answer to this question is of great historical significance: It was on June 19th that the Union Army marched into Galveston, Texas and enforced emancipation. Since then, celebrations in Galveston have been among the largest Juneteenth celebrations in the world.

There are many ways to celebrate Juneteenth. Host a meal for friends and family, participate in an online event, or find a new way to advocate for racial equality in your community.
