World Meteorological Day

Today is World Meteorological Day! It’s celebrated every year to honor the formation of the World Meteorological Organization. Each year, a new theme is announced. This year’s theme is “Early Warning and Early Action” for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Past themes have included “Our future climate” in 2003 and “Weather, climate and the air we breathe” in 2009.

This global observance is celebrated in several different ways. There are various conferences and exhibitions for meteorological professionals, community leaders and the general public.  Prizes for research are presented on or close to World Meteorological Day, such as the International Meteorological Organization Prize.
