Tonight is the biggest night of the year for the music industry—the Grammy Awards! At the first awards celebration in 1959, the Recording Academy presented 22 awards. Tonight, there will be over 80 awards honoring the best music of the year.
The music industry originally created the Gramophone Awards to ward off the so-called threat of rock 'n’ roll. Within three years they had given in. In 1962 Chubby Checker won the first award for Best Rock and Roll Recording. In 1983 Michael Jackson became the first artist to win 8 Grammys in one year. Carlos Santana tied the record in 1999.
