National Flip Flop Day

It’s National Flip Flop Day! Today we celebrate everyone's favorite footwear of the summer — Flip Flops! Today is the perfect day to put away your cold-weather shoes once and for all and bring out your flip flops. Flip flops are a casual form of sandals where a Y-shaped strap wraps around the top of the sandal to keep the foot securely in place. Did you know that the name "flip flops" comes from the sound the shoes make when the sole slaps against the botton of your feet? This summertime sandal isn't universally called flip flops, however. For example, the shoe is referred to as "Plakkies" in South Africa and "Slippers" in Hawaii.

Flip flops have been around for thousands of years! They can even be spotted in ancient Egyptian murals that date all the way back to 4,000 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans also sported a version of the flip flip where the strap was situated between the 2nd and 3rd toe rather than the variety we're familiar with where the thing strap is between the big toe and the 2nd toe.

Flip flops are a fun footwear choice and truly represent the start of summer! Break out your favorite pair today, and let your feet be free! Happy National Flip Flop Day.
