July 14, 2012 is

Bastille Day

Bastille Day is a French national holiday that is celebrated annually on July 14. This day is comparable to Independence Day in the U.S.

The Bastille was a stronghold in Paris that was built in the 14th century during the Hundred Years’ War. In fact, the word “bastille” means “fortress” in French. During the French Revolution, Louis XVI used it as a prison. This structure came to represent his power, which the revolution sought to overthrow.

Bastille Day commemorates the day in 1789 that rioters stormed the building, which was demolished in the coming days. This was more a symbolic victory than a military feat, as there were only 7 prisoners in the Bastille at the time. Now, the raid serves to mark the opening stages of the French Revolution.

On Bastille Day, the French celebrate with parties, parades and festivals. Uncork a bottle of French wine or dine at a French restaurant to celebrate Bastille Day your own way!
