Labor Day

Today is Labor Day! Every year on the first Monday of September, our nation celebrates the contributions American workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

In 1882, New York City held the first "workingman's holiday," complete with a parade of 10,000 workers. Over the next few years, Labor Day celebrations spread across the country. In 1894, Congress passed an act that made Labor Day an official national holiday.

Today, many Americans view Labor Day as the unofficial end to summer. Celebrate with cookouts, small backyard gatherings, or a weekend spent with family. You can also send free Labor Day eCards to family and friends. Happy Labor Day!
