National Day of Service and Remembrance

Today is the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. Originally launched by the 9/11 nonprofit MyGoodDeed in 2002, this day supports the tradition of engaging in charitable service as an annual tribute to the victims, survivors, and those who offered their own service in response to the attacks on 9/11. 

Also called Patriot Day, today is a time to reflect and honor the memory of the 2,977 killed in the attacks on September 11th, 2001. In the United States, the American flag is flown at half-staff at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments throughout the world.

A moment of silence is observed to correspond with the individual attacks, beginning at 8:46 am EST – the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
