International Mother Language Day
Today is International Mother Language Day! This annual celebration honors language diversity and variety across the globe. It also observes the human right to use native language.
This holiday is a public holiday in Bangladesh. It marks the date in 1952 when four students were killed in 1952 for using their mother language, Bengali. In Bangladesh, it is also known as Shaheed Day.
International Mother Language Day has been observed annually since February of 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity.
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) traditionally sets a theme each year and holds related events at its Paris headquarters. Past themes have been “inclusive education” and “local languages for global citizenship.”
