Today's Reason to Celebrate

July 4, 2009 was

Independence Day

Fireworks, parades and cookouts—oh my! Today America celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. This event occurred on July 4, 1776.

This memorable moment in history laid the foundation for the U.S. Constitution and defined the fundamental principles of freedom including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But did you know that the official document was not signed until a later date? That’s right: on August 2, delegates began to sign the “engrossed” copy.

On this day, Americans don red, white and blue and take part in some truly American traditions. This makes Independence Day a great day to spend outside with family and friends. Just remember to honor the courage and dedication of the Americans who made our country what it is today.

Happy Birthday America!
